Administering Windows Servers From Windows Workstations

You can administer an NT/2000/2003 domain using your NT
Workstation or Windows 2000/XP Professional systems, as
long as you have the Admin Tools installed on the desktop.
These tools can be acquired on the appropriate Server CD.
ADMIN TOOLS (NT/2000/2003)
• NT4 .......... CDROM:\CLIENTS\SRVTOOLS\WINNT\SETUP.BAT
• WIN2K ........ CDROM:\I386\ADMINPAK.MSI
• WIN2K3 ....... CDROM:\I386\ADMINPAK.MSI
ADMIN TOOLS (XP)
You can obtain the ADMINPAK.MSI file from the Windows 2003
Server CD, which has is currently in full release: (RTM)

Always, always remember to uninstall the previous version
of ADMINPAK.MSI before installing a newer build. Always.

PERSONAL NOTES
• In addition to the Resource Kits, you should have
these tools installed immediately, if you have any
administrative responsibilities.
• The tools from Win2K will work on an XP system if
they were installed prior to the upgrade to XP.
Otherwise, you will find that the Win2K ADMINPAK.MSI
will not install on an XP system. Use the downloads
above to get a version from the .NET Server beta.
• The 2003 ADMINPAK.MSI will only install on XP SP1
or Windows 2003 systems.
• Always, always remember to uninstall the previous
version of ADMINPAK.MSI before installing a newer
build. Always.
