unless you have the following tool:

...whereas the Defragger in WindowsXP can easily
be scheduled:

PERSONAL NOTES
• The effects of fragmentation depend on the type of
file I/O that your system generates. File and Web
serving will be negatively affected by fragmentation
more easily than database-type servers that handle
all of their own file I/O.
• In WinXP and Win2003, the built-in defragger can be
run from the command line. This makes it *much*
easier to schedule defrags for all your drives as
you see fit (as compared to Windows 2000).
• I've used Diskeeper since version 1.0 (through 6.x),
but I greatly prefer Norton Speed Disk v5.x over DK4
and DK5. I have it running flawlessly on over 2 dozen
machines now (mostly SMP systems with large RAID
arrays), and it defrags faster and more thoroughly
than DK... (and without a reboot).
Also, SD will defrag Pagefiles, the MFT, Directories
and files, all in realtime.
Unfortunately, for XP, Speeddisk is no longer the
reigning performance champ. Symantec has finally made
use of the approved Microsoft Defragger API, and as
a result, Speed Disk 2002 is merely a shell of its
former self. Sadly, I can no longer recommend it. :(
• FWIW, I found Perfect Disk (versions up until 2.2)
less than worthless. It consumed many, many system
resources, yet hardly defragged anything in a useful
way.
I've been running PerfectDisk 2000 v5.0 for a while
now, and it is much, much better than those older,
crappy versions. With Speedisk bowing out of the
running, I am happy to recommend PerfectDisk for
automated defragging under Windows 2000 and XP.
I still wish that it would defrag directories online
like the old Speedisk did, but at least it will backup
all files in a single pass.
