products generally require less physical resources and
are more easily deployed in smaller environments.

PERSONAL NOTES
• In the last 5 or so years, I've tested and used many
of the products listed above (in particular: SLmail,
Mercur32, Merak, MDaemon and iMail) but my favorite
is definitely VPOP3. It has tons of useful features,
and it is not very expensive. It also sports excellent
performance, especially for mailing lists, and the
developer is very open to feature requests...
• My next favorite SMTP/POP3 product is Kerio Mail Server
which has groupware functionality and supports multiple
platforms (Windows, Linux, and MacOS X), in addition
to supporting BlackHole lists.
• Mercury/32 (from the maker of Pegasus Mail) is also
an excellent product.
• For the record, I'm a VPOP3 Reseller.
• IIS somes with an SMTP service, but this only handles
outbound mail. You would still require some other
product for inbound emails (POP3 or IMAP).
• Windows Server 2003 (IIS6) comes with a built-in POP3
service, in addition to SMTP.
• You would be highly advised to seek out SPAM and AV
software for your SMTP gateway.
• My favorite command-line mailer is BLAT
• The BAT! is an excellent email client that can also
operate and a mail server for a small network.
• "No SPAM Today" is a Windows product based on the
ever-popular SpamAssassin. There are a number of
other Linux and Windows-based SPAM filters based
on SpamAssassin.
