USING REMOTE DESKTOP
Remote Desktop is an excellent tool for connecting to
*certain* Windows systems. It can be obtained for use
on every 32-bit version of Windows, with the following
caveats:
The machine you are trying to connect FROM can be running
any version of 32-bit Windows. Windows XP and 2003 come
with the client tool installed by default. You will need
to download the Remote Desktop client tool for other
versions of Windows.
The machine you are trying to connect TO must be running
one of the following:
Windows 2000 Server, with Terminal Services
Windows XP Pro, with Remote Desktop enabled
Windows Server 2003, with RD or TS enabled
The client software does not enable your machine to accept
Remote Desktop connections from other systems. Users of
Windows 9x, WinME, Windows 2000 Pro, or XP Home will have
to resort to NetMeeting or some 3rd party tool in order to
ACCEPT a remote connection from another system.
REMOTE DESKTOP VS TERMINAL SERVICES
Both Windows XP Pro and Windows Server 2003 come with
Remote Desktop, whereas Windows 2000 Server sports RD
functionality in the guise of Terminal Services Admin
Mode.
In Windows 2000, Terminal Services (TS) had two modes:
• Remote Administration Mode
• Application Serving Mode
In Windows Server 2003, the functionality is split across
different applications/utilities -- Remote Desktop and
Terminal Services:
• 2003 RD = 2000 TS Admin Mode
• 2003 TS = 2000 TS App Mode
To provide Citrix-like functionality, you will want to
use Windows Server 2003 with Terminal Services enabled.
To manage your servers remotely, you want to use Remote
Desktop in Windows XP or 2003
ENABLING REMOTE DESKTOP REMOTELY
If you have admin access to an XP/2003 machine and you
need to enable Remote Desktop, then edit the following
registry:
KEY: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\TerminalServer
DATA: fDenyTSConnections
VALUE: 0 = enable Remote Desktop / 1 = disabled
