Windows 2000 (and later) comes with native support for
monitoring installed services. You can configure it to
restart the services, send alerts or execute scripts.

	START -> RUN -> COMPMGMT.MSC

	- Right Click on "My Computer"
	- Select "Manage"
	- Right Click on "Computer Management"
	- Select "Connect to Another Computer"
	- Expand "Services and Applications"
	- Expand "Services"
	- Select a service of your choice
	- Select "Recovery" tab

For more flexibility, however, you should look into the
various products listed below. They will assist you in
ensuring that the servers and services in your care are
up and available, and they can be configured to alert
various personnel or restart services if necessary.

Some of these products will also check the EventLog for
errors and allow you to take action on the results.

PERSONAL FILES

• Servers Alive is an excellent starter product. Free
or extremely low cost, depending on how many services
  you need to monitor.

• Alchemy Network Monitor is another excellent tool
which is easier to setup than ServersAlive, and is
more responsive with regards to system checks. Only
drawback for me is the lack of SysLog capabilities,
and could use a few more reports. ServersAlive is
also better at providing escalation options.

• Many of these products also gather Performance Counter
information, making them useful for more than just
  uptime monitors.

• Server Monitor is a very cool web-based management
console. Provides nice reports, and has excellent
  pricing...

• Whenever possible, you should attempt to use free
tools and scripts for monitoring, especially if you
have nothing in place as yet. The data you obtain
from these tools/products will allow you to better
select/justify one of the commercial tools if that's
what you need to do at some later point.
